What is AI visibility, and why it's the new SEO

AI visibility is whether AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Gemini name your brand when someone asks them to recommend a tool.

For twenty years, being found meant ranking on Google. That's still true, but a growing share of buyers now skip the ten blue links entirely. They ask ChatGPT "what's the best tool for X" and act on the three names it gives back. If your brand isn't one of those names, you don't exist for that search, no matter where you rank on Google.

This is what people mean by GEO, or generative engine optimization. It's a different game from classic SEO. Google ranks pages; AI engines synthesize an answer and cite a few sources. You can sit at position one on Google and still be invisible inside ChatGPT, because the engine pulls from training data, live web results, and what third-party sites say about you, not just your meta tags.

This checker runs real queries against the engines we can ground honestly (OpenAI with live web search, Gemini with Google grounding, plus DeepSeek) and counts how often your brand actually comes up. No mockups. It's the same check our product runs for paying customers.

Why this exists

Most founders have a nagging sense that "AI is eating some of my traffic" but no way to see it. Analytics won't tell you that a prospect asked Perplexity, got handed three competitors, and never typed your domain. The leak is invisible, which is exactly why it's dangerous.

When you do see it, it stings in a useful way. Watching ChatGPT recommend four competitors by name and skip you is concrete enough to make a team act. "We should do GEO someday" turns into "we're not in the answer, and here's who is."

We made this free because the first step is just knowing your number. Once you can see where you stand and who's cited instead, the fixes (third-party mentions, structured content, an llms.txt file) stop being abstract.

How it works

  1. 1Drop in your site URL. We read the page to work out your brand name and what you actually do.
  2. 2From that, we write three realistic buyer questions — the kind someone would ask an AI before picking a tool in your category.
  3. 3We send those questions to live AI engines and read the answers, checking whether your brand gets named and which other companies do.
  4. 4You get a 0–100 visibility score, a per-engine breakdown, the competitors cited instead of you, and the likeliest reasons you're being skipped.

Frequently asked

Why don't you test Claude or Perplexity?

We only report engines we can query honestly with grounding: OpenAI (with web search), Gemini (with Google grounding), and DeepSeek. Showing a logo we can't actually test would make the score a lie, so we don't.

What's a good AI visibility score?

Most sites start low, often under 20. Getting named in even one of three answers already puts you ahead of most. The goal isn't a perfect 100, it's being one of the handful of brands the engines reach for in your category.

Why does ChatGPT cite my competitors and not me?

Usually because they're mentioned more across third-party sites (reviews, listicles, Reddit) and have more structured, quotable content. AI engines lean on what the wider web says about you, not just what you say about yourself.

Will fixing this help my Google SEO too?

They overlap but aren't the same race. Strong third-party mentions and clear, structured content help both. You can win one and lose the other, though, which is why it's worth measuring AI visibility on its own.

Is the test live or cached?

Live when you run it, then cached for 24 hours so re-checking the same site doesn't burn API calls on a result that won't have moved. Engine answers don't change minute to minute.

What is llms.txt?

A simple file, like robots.txt but for AI crawlers, that tells language models how to read and use your site. Missing it is one of the more common, easily-fixed reasons a site is hard for AI to cite.
